Why Have An Outdoor Cigarette Receptacle?

If you are completely against smoking, then you probably wonder why it is so critical to have an outdoor cigarette receptacle.  The reason is quite simple:  While you may be strongly opposed to smoking, there are still smokers in the world who need a place to discard of their cigarette butts.  Don’t you agree that seeing cigarettes butts lying all over the place is unsightly and very disturbing?  One way to eliminate this problem is to give smokers a choice as to what to do with their cigarette when they are finished smoking it.

People (who smoke) not only put their own lives in danger, they are a threat to others and to the environment as well.   A discarded cigarette that is simply “tossed” away can cause injury and even death when it ignites something nearby.  Many forest fires throughout the United States have been directly caused by a poorly discarded cigarette.  A smoldering cigarette in any public area is a threat that could have been avoided if the cigarette was disposed of properly in the first place.

A small smoldering cigarette can cause a tremendous amount of damage.  This is especially true if the weather conditions are just right for a fire.  Humidity and moisture content play a major role in the possibility of a fire occurring.  Wind speed also can determine if a fire will get started by a small cigarette butt.  A fire is likely to start if the environmental conditions are just right and there is “fuel” for the fire nearby.  Dried and rotten wood and any kind of decomposition are prime places that just love a “fire”.

Because smoldering cigarettes are so dangerous and cigarette butts are so unsightly and unsanitary, it is very important that cigarette receptacles are readily available wherever they are needed.  This includes any public place and in rest stops and forested areas like state and national parks.  Most people are more that willing to use a receptacle if they can find it.  That is why most public places do have designated areas where smoking is allowed and receptacles are placed.  Any outdoor cigarette receptacle should be marked appropriately so that smokers will be encouraged to use it.  If it is out of sight, it can easily be “out of mind” also!
