Correct Cigarette Butt Disposal
There is nothing quite as disgusting as looking at cigarette butts that have been haphazardly thrown on the ground, by the side of the road or on the sidewalk. They are an eyesore and an unhealthy one, at that. Cigarette butt disposal is something that needs to be seriously looked at. This nasty problem needs to be addressed – sooner rather than later!
Most smokers are responsible citizens and use an ash tray or other cigarette disposal receptacle to dispose of their cigarettes. However, there are some inconsiderate smokers who just throw their lit cigarette right out the window and onto the road. Others just smoke away while on a stroll and then just throw their cigarette on the ground. There have been many grass and forest fires started by unconcerned and careless smokers.
Then there are those smokers who throw their cigarette on the ground and smash it out so that it no longer is lit. They think they’ve done everyone a favor. However, the cigarette is still there, littering away the environment. And, there it will sit for 10 years decomposing away! Most smokers don’t realize how long a cigarette lasts after it is extinguished. These old cigarettes contain harmful and toxic chemicals that are often ingested by innocent animals.
Most states have laws that forbid throwing trash (including cigarettes) out of the window. Most states have well posted information telling drivers and passengers to “Use Your Ash Tray”. Many states charge hefty fines for people caught throwing cigarettes out of their windows.
In order for smoking to remain legal, it is important that smokers take notice of what they are doing to the environment. Smoke well away from public places and put your cigarette completely out in a cigarette butt disposal receptacle. Refrain from throwing your cigarette – ignited or not – out your car window. Don’t be the cause of a massive forest fire or the contributor to a polluted environment. Be a responsible person and be careful what you smoke, where you smoke, when you smoke and how you dispose of your “smokes”.
